Luke 9:62 (NLT)62 But Jesus told him, “Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.”

This is an interesting passage in the sense that Jesus is telling a variety of folks, what it means to follow Jesus.  One tells Jesus that he will go wherever Jesus goes, and Jesus replies, “the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.”  This means that the life of a disciple is not one of permanence in anything, but recognition that we are called OUT into the world without assurances. Another individual is ASKED by Jesus to be a disciple, but the man says that he must first bury his dead father.  Sounds reasonable, but Jesus tells him to let the “spiritually dead bury the dead.”  Not incredibly pastoral, but he’s essentially is telling the man that it’s now or never, because Jesus must come first.  Lastly, a third man, again tells Jesus he will follow him, but he wants to say good-bye to his family.  Jesus responds to his request in the above verse.  Why was Jesus so tough on his disciples, and by extension on us?  Jesus understands that his journey is not for the faith of heart or the easily dissuaded.  He calls for commitment and faith above all, and despite their little commitment and little faith, the disciples continue to walk with Jesus even when the going gets tough.  Are we walking with Jesus during tough times?  That is what we are called to do, so let’s get moving as a church and as individuals.  Love you all.  Peace and Blessings, Pastor Bob
