Ezekiel 43:12 (NLT)12 And this is the basic law of the Temple: absolute holiness! The entire top of the mountain where the Temple is built is holy. Yes, this is the basic law of the Temple.
Basic Law makes you think of “obey the speed limit” or “cross the street at the crosswalk,” or “don’t run with scissors!” But with the basic law of the New Temple is ABSOLUTE HOLINESS, what can you do with that except concede defeat! I obey basic laws “generally” with the natural understanding that literally no one actually goes the speed limit, and I’ve run with scissors on more than one occasions, and we will not even talk about where or how I cross streets. Because we are all sinners, the concept of “absolute holiness” as basic is beyond our comprehension. It can be an ideal, a goal, or at the very least, something we image aspiring too at some point in life, but seriously, that is going to be basic law? Then what will be considered advanced law? The answer is the same! First and last, God expects us to aspire to absolute holiness on His Holy Mountain! We are exhorted 4 times in the Book of Leviticus to be holy because God is Holy. The first time foreshadows the Ezekiel vision of the Temple by saying, “Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.” (Leviticus 19:2) That is what God expects, but in order to achieve this basic law, we are given the Holy Spirit to direct our lives. As we keep on trying, we hopefully see our efforts improve and progress, until we are called home and stand in front of to the Holy Throne. It is there, that our Savior declares to His Father that we are His for all eternity and then it is God who makes us absolutely holy in and through the image of Christ. Yet again, God sets the standard, and then God ensure we meet the standard.
