Nahum 1:7 (NLT)7 The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him.
When my kids were small, and we would cuddle up with them, they would often as, “why you pet me?” Their mother and I could see the love and trust they had by our gentle hugs and positive embrace of them as they wondered, as children do, why life is so great! Of course, over time, and as they grew, words like mommy and daddy, and phrases like the aforementioned one slowly decreased. But the trust they have in us has only grown stronger, because of our increased love and presence in their lives, while encouraging them to expand, evolve, and mature in their experiences, while knowing that we had their back and wanted their best. Isn’t that exactly what God does for us. The prophet Nahum speaks to the people during the expansion of the Assyrians towards Judah, and the anticipation of conquest and destruction of Jerusalem. Nahum warns the people that their actions need to improve, but begin this section of his prophecies with the acknowledgement that “The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes!” Isn’t that a joy to recognize, that even more than our parents, God is a strong refuge for all who trust him. Our question is, how much faith and trust are we putting in God’s goodness? He has shown us his goodness with the advent of His Son! He has shown his goodness with the coming of His Holy Spirit at Pentecost! He has shown his goodness by choosing each of us for salvation! Finally, he has shown his goodness, by being actively a part of our lives from before the foundation of the earth to this present day! Literally, what more can God do to show his goodness to His people? The answer is that God is our CONSTANT refuge now and always! Peace and Blessings! Pastor Bob
