Isaiah 51:22 (NLT)22 This is what the Sovereign Lord, your God and Defender, says: “See, I have taken the terrible cup from your hands. You will drink no more of my fury.

Drinking from the cup of the Lord’s fury does NOT sound like fun!  We see in the later chapter of the prophet of Isaiah a great deal of “God’s wrath and fury” language.  We also see the idea that the “wrath and fury of the Lord” has been fulfilled.  How did that happen?  Isaiah also talks repeatedly about the coming of the Messiah, the Prince of Prince, Lord of lords, King of kings, Wonderful, and Counselor.  The implication is that the coming of the Messiah will deliver the people into an age of renewal, recovery, and rejection of the hated oppressors.  What a surprise for them when Jesus tells us to give to our oppressors more than they ask for, AND to do it with a cheerful heart. I do not know how any of us could do such a thing on our own, except WITH the Holy Spirit.  On top of all that, Jesus is the one who takes the cup of wrath from our hand, and himself drinks it down to its dregs so that we can be forgiven, and so that he can take the consequences of OUR SIN upon himself.  That is SUBSTITUTIONARY ATONEMENT.  Jesus substitutes himself for us, so that we can have an eternal relationship with God.  Jesus pays the price for us, so that we can live.  The fact that he did so willingly and without any sin of his own, results in his resurrection, which becomes the first fruits of our own resurrection to come.  Isn’t that great!  So, rest assured that God’s wrath is lifted off all of us.  We will still endure the consequences of our sins here today, but the long-term consequences have been paid in full.  Peace and Blessings!  Pastor Bob
