Isaiah 9:6 (NLT)
6 For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The prophet Isaiah definitely has a way with words.  I could literally write a verse of the day reflection for more than a month with all the rich and wonderful verses found in this one day.  However, all other verses pale and are muted in comparison with this incredible verse.  This past Sunday I spoke about Isaiah’s initial declaration of the coming Messiah, but in Isaiah 9:1-7, the prophet gives us a clear understanding of who the coming Messiah will be.  From this verse, we know that God is sending His Son and that the government of the world will rest on him.  That is a tremendous responsibility for an average person, or even someone versed in managing people.  THE government will rest on his shoulders, so what will he do.  The rest of the verse speaks to the attributes the Messiah will use to rule, as well as who he is.  As a professional counselor, I love the fact that Jesus is called a Wonderful Counselor because so many people need to be heard and listened to.  We see the Messiah’s divine nature, which somehow the religious leaders of Jesus’ time seem to miss.  The Messiah WILL be the Mighty God and the Everlasting Father.  Mighty and Everlasting are characteristics that tell us that Jesus will always be present in our lives and in fact transcend time by being everlasting, and as the Mighty God will be always in control.  Lastly, Prince of Peace.  Solomon tells us in Ecclesiastes that the point of life is to love your spouse and family, to work hard, and to worship God.  This is true joy and true Peace, and this is what God in Christ brings with Him when he returns.  Let us look forward to that wonderful day.
