Psalm 103:15 (NLT)
15 Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die.
Not to be a buzz kill, but our lives are pretty limited in terms of the span of our days. The psalmist tells us that our days are like grass and wildflowers, which bloom and die. In my sermon this coming week, I talk about the problem with poetry, which is metaphor and how to understand it. We are not dandelions, which we mow over every week throughout the spring and summer, but people that by and large live to seventy six plus years, if not longer. In fact, if you live to the age of 65 without major health issues, you have a 80-90% chance of living to 85 years of age. However, even if we live to 85 and longer, that is a pretty short period of time over the course of the entire history of the world. (Other fun facts: wooly mammoths were still alive when the pyramids in Egypt were built. The University of Oxford was founded before the Aztec Empire in Mexico was established) Time is relative and can seem short in times of joy and seem long in times of trouble. On the other hand, God has given us a span of time to establish a legacy of life that impacts others when we share how our lives have been changed by Jesus Christ. When we look to our children, relatives, and friends having been impacted by what we have done and how we have lived and how we have spoken of the impact of Christ, we are also impacting them. Let us never despair about the length of our lives, but always rejoice that God has given us the ability to praise and glorify Him, through His Son. Peace and Blessings.
